About the Prairie Wildflowers Print

I spent the first few decades of my life in the Midwest, and while I spent most of my time outdoors as a kid in the woods, I always enjoyed spotting wildflowers on the edges of fields or along the roadside. Recently, on a trip back to my home state, I learned a bit more about native prairie habitats - less than 5% of which remains from what originally existed in the US. I visited a beautiful restored prairie in full summer bloom and was inspired to do a series of paintings based on the plants that I saw there.

The final print features twenty-three different species of both plants and butterflies (plus several bees), all of which are native to the prairies of the central or eastern US. While the color scheme of the print flowed naturally from the rainbow of colorful flowers found in the prairie, the complex composition took many revisions to get just right.
